Caronport’s history

Caronport sits on the Trans-Canada Highway about 21 km west of Moose Jaw, in the Rural Municipality of Caron No. 162. Its story begins in the Second World War, when a British Commonwealth pilot training base was built near the hamlet of Caron. Known as RCAF Station Caron, or Caron Airport, the airbase operated from December 17, 1941, until January 14, 1944.

The village took its name from that base. Though the runways are now all defunct, they still shape the community, since the layout of the village was determined by where the original runways had been placed. Caronport became an incorporated village on January 1, 1988.

Education is a big part of Caronport today. Briercrest College and Seminary, a private Christian post-secondary institution, is based here, and since 1963 it has hosted a teen youth conference every February called Youth Quake. The Briercrest Christian Academy, a high school run by the college, shares many of its facilities, including the cafeteria, gymnasium and chapel. Younger students attend Caronport Elementary, a Kindergarten to Grade 8 school in the Prairie South School Division. Caronport is the largest village in Saskatchewan by population.
